Nicely said - and I couldn't agree more.

It's been a couple years since I made one - but I'm back into it, due to the promise of playing an amazing storytelling game called Ribbon Drive. The gist is that you roleplay through a road trip, the characters and stories being formed by the mix cds that the players bring.

It ties into my feeling that a mix tape is a narrative - that it has to have flow, it has to have a beginning, middle, and end. That it's more than the sum of its parts.

I always made more mix cds than I received. I'd craft them, making sure each song flowed into the next, that the feelings I wanted to convey were there. Sometimes I'd start from a title, and sometimes it'd come to me at the end. I still miss naming each side of the tape, though.

Just yesterday an internet acquaintance told me they still had a mix CD I sent them years ago. I'd totally forgotten about it - but it made me really happy.

Sometimes, I even made them for myself. Yeah, I know.

Anyway, you can find Ribbon Drive here:
